Evolution, Conservationism and General Nerdiness

Every year I like to look back at how I've progressed, be proud of what I've done but also set a "data point" for which I will try to beat myself. Competing with myself has always fueled my fitness regime — having goals, a number or a personal record which you can beat while improving yourself is thrilling and perhaps a little addictive. Here is a look back on previous years.

I used to be over-weight, technically obese at over 30% body fat. I'm happy to have found an activity that I can do with my wife and has hopefully added years to my life. I've gone from "not bad for a fattie" mentality in races to picturing myself as a thin, healthy person who strives to see how far I can go. I'm always amazed at how tough people can be, and I think anyone can do it if they find something they love to do that helps them lose weight.

2010 Cycling:
— 36 Races; 2 Crits, 5 MTB, 5 Endurance, 7 OffRoad TT and 17 CX
— 7409.76 total miles
— averaged 617.5 miles per month
— most miles in a month: 1024.08 (in May)
— longest ride 103.3 mi (avg 16.9 mph over hills with Joe, Gers and Mott).
— averaged about 11 training hours per week
— Approximately 575 total hours of training
— most hours trained in a week 22.28
— Max recorded watts 863W (I need to work on this!)
— Max average watts up Kuglar Mill: 299W (15.7mph/7:35)

2010 Running:
— 1 race: Heart Mini Marathon (15k)
— 234.48 total miles (I didn't get to use Nike+ to track all my runs)
— 19.5 mi/mo avg
— most mi/mo 49.25
— longest run 9.33 mi
— Set all new best times for 5k, 10k and 15k!

Commuting
This year I commuted a lot and not only used commuting as part of my training but actively used my bike to reduce my car trips. But this environmental message is slightly a paradox — I traveled thousands of miles to bike races, and at the moment my car is broken down so I HAVE TO ride my bike!

Over the summer I found out that Cliff Bar had the 2 mile challenge, it was a cool to combine my nerdiness for tracking numbers with my cycling and helping the environment and a charity. Cliff Bar donates money to 3 charities, and even more to the charity that commute the most miles (users join a team for a charity and log their miles). Supposedly 90% of trips in the US are 2 miles or shorter — obviously a distance easily covered on bike.

This year I did a total of 1794 miles of commuting in 160 trips — almost 2000 lbs of CO2 conserved.

Here are my workout stats (approximate not exact) since 2007:
Total Workout Days: 962
Total Workouts: 1419
Total Distance: 19,409.20 mi.
Total Burned: 917,231 (kcal)

2010 Racing Year in Review

I love looking back at the year, I did so many different types of racing that the year felt longer because nothing got old. Every year I like to do a look at my numbers because I grew up a Baseball fan and that is a sport of stats.

RUNNING
Last Winter I ran like a maniac — I would head out into the snow and cold, hitting the trails in Ault Park and Indian Hill. Basically I went out and had fun and come race day I somehow ran much faster than expected, knocking 7 minutes off my previous record and beating my personal bests for the 5k and 10k while running uphill!

15k Time:1:06:53
Overall Pace:7:12
10k Split: 44:27
5k Split: 22:06

OFF-ROAD ENDURANCE RACES
Over the course of the year I fit a hand full of these "one day classics" for the dirt into my calendar. These races can be real tests of one's will and some of the races feature 10,000 feet of climbing. I began training for these in the spring, when wet conditions made riding off-road a rarity. My 8th place at Cohutta was so unexpected and I was so blown away and proud of that result. The same with my 3rd place at John Bryan, never thought I would podium in any mountain bike race.

RACES: 4
AVG PLACE: 11th (8, 36, 3, 6, 4th)
AVG OUT OF: 64
PODIUM: 1
TOP 10: 4 races
TOP 10%: 2
TOP 25%: 2
TOP 50%: 1
AVG DISTANCE: 64.8 miles
AVG TIME: 4:02:36
AVG SPEED: 16.03 mph/25.79 kph (I think my Frankenbike race was pretty fast, but typically I go 10-12mph)

CROSS COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKING
Mountain biking is kind of my baseball season, I feel like one of the Boys of Summer — outside doing battle when the temperature are in the 90s. This was my first year racing Expert, which is the highest regional classification. I still feel like a rookie out there and I really battled every race not to be last place. But persistence paid off and I ended up 3rd in the CORA race series.

RACES: 4
AVG PLACE: 11th (12, 23, 6, 4th)
AVG OUT OF: 15
TOP 10: 2 races
TOP 50%: 1
AVG DISTANCE: 27.25 miles
AVG TIME: 2:30:12
AVG SPEED: 10.89 mph/17.52 kph

CYCLOCROSS
Cyclocross is a beautiful sport that I look forward to every Autumn. Each weekend is a day trip around the Ohio Valley spent hanging with friends. This is also my first year racing Elite in Men's cyclocross. Same as in mountain biking, some races I would struggle not to be last place. Persistence also paid off and I ended up tying for 10th Overall in the OVCX.

RACES: 12 Elite Races (9 in OVCX)
AVG PLACE: 17th
AVG OUT OF: 22
TOP 10: 4 races
TOP 50%: 1 race
AVG SPEED: 16.44 mph/25.46 kph (races where speed was recorded)

RACES: 4 UCI Cyclocross Races (Cat 2/3)
AVG PLACE: 59th (22, 34, 94, 84th)
AVG OUT OF: 111
TOP 50%: 2

Highlights
I didn't know if I could finish Cohutta and I finished 8th, that was like Christmas morning. The same with my Hear Mini run. Getting 3rd in the 6 Hours of John Bryan and in the Kings CX TT series made me happy that I have a little motor in my legs that can hammer pretty well.

Low Points
I didn't share this with many people but I felt pretty bad after Mohican. My result in Cohutta inflated my ego a bit and I trained really hard for Mohican. I was riding with teammates that ended up top 20, but somehow I fell apart. I felt ashamed that my legs failed me. Another low point was a really bad crash in a paceline on rainy railroad tracks, I was so ashamed of my riding that it tooks months for me to ride with other people. And lastly I felt pretty low during cross season after bad results in Louisville and Bloomington, I got burnt out and nearly ended my season! I feel like these examples could be cured if I focus on the quality of my bike-handling.

In Summation
It's interesting to look back on the results. I think I am going to have to work hard on intensity this year to get stronger at cross country mountain biking and cyclocross. However, perhaps in a few years I will focus on endurance events for a season or two. I could also focus on time trials sometime in the future.

Jimmy's 2009 Mileage and Statistics Report

Sorry, I'm a bit stat obsessed sometimes and like to take stock of a year and look back at my numbers (I try to balance having fun riding while also recording numbers as a way of tracking performances because I get a thrill of competing against myself).

Running:
Heart Mini Marathon and 2 Relay legs of the Flying Pig!
— 223 mi
— 9.4 mi/mo avg

2009 Lessons:
I should probably be more aware of training hours per week instead of mileage. This year I also want to train "smarter" and take more advantage of training time by working drills into workouts.

Here is a look back at previous years spent as a "bike path bunny":
2008
Cycling:
— 6 Cyclocross Races
— 3563mi,
— averaged 296 miles per month
— most miles in a month: 478
— longest ride 71.5 mi (avg 17.09 mph).
— averaged 6 hours per week
— most hours trained in a week 11.5
Running:
— 73.67mi
— averaged running 6.1 miles per month
— longest run: 6.4mi

2007

Get out the Calculator!

As a typical boy (aside from the excessive body hair and the ability to speak in tongues) raised in the United States I was very into sports like Baseball, Basketball and Football. And since many of the sports in the US are tedious and difficult to watch I became fascinated with statistics.

So it is mildly interesting to look back and see what you have done — as well as to think about what I wish to accomplish in the new year.

2007
Cycling: 1139mi (began cycling in July), 189.27mi/mo avg, 262mi/mo max, longest ride 52.5mi (avg 16.36 mph)
Running: 432mi, 36mi/mo avg, longest run 8.3mi.

2008
Cycling: 3563mi 296mi/mo avg, 478mi/mo max, longest ride 71.5mi. (avg 17.09 mph)
Running: 73.67mi, 6.1mi/mo avg,longest run 6.4mi.

These numbers are somewhat impressive compared to the once overweight fatass that sat on the couch all the time, but extremely unimpressive compared to all my new acquaintances who bury my ass on every ride. This weird line of thought was inspired by my Nike+ log-in screen that displayed my rather unimpressive year as a runner.
